We went out to spend the night
at the Volcano House.
We spent most of the day at
the Hula presentation
and the visitors center.
Of course, we drove around
the Crater Rim Drive
and looked around a bit.
Then when it started getting
close to sundown
we drove down to the ocean.
We could only see
the red glare of the "Mothers
Day Flow"
which hadn't come across the
pali (cliffs) yet.
It was still a beautiful sight.
Here's some shots of the park
in daylight.
Lava flow from the 1974 eruption
Halemaumau Crater
Another smaller crater and more lava
David standing by steam vents.
Then another day later that
week, we
were on our way to Waipio
Valley and we heard
on the radio that the lava
was coming down the
pali like waterfalls.
So we decided we would
drive on around the island
after our wagon ride and
we should make it to the Volcano
just about sunset.
And we did! And we were really
glad.
Just as they said the lava
was coming down
in waterfalls. It was still
about 1 1/2 miles away
from the road, but you could
see it real well with
binoculars. And your
could see the ohia trees
flaming up as the lava caught
them.
No, I didn't take this picture, but it was taken the night we were
there.
This is my picture, but my telephoto wasn't as strong.
