We flew to Maui on Pacific Wings.
It was our first time and we loved it.
The propellor jet planes fly low
and we saw whales on the way over and
got an amazing view of Kohala.
We drove down to Kehei to check out the
hotel where Timmy and Jordon will
spend their honeymoon and drove down
by the Grand Wailea and the beaches.
We had a late breakfast at the Big Wave
Cafe
in Kehei, great food, reasonable prices.
That night we went to the stage production,
Ulalena.
It is an amazing blend of ancient hula and
modern dance that was truly spellbinding.
The sets were beautiful and the "orchestra"
was
outstanding. We all loved it. We couldn't
take any pictures but I scanned these from
the program and our souvenier photo.
After the show we wandered around the shops
in Lahaina and had dinner at the Hard
Rock Cafe.
We stayed at the Ohana Maui Islander Inn,
which is old but clean and the suite was
perfect for us with a kitchenette to have
breakfast
and a separate bedroom. The three of us
were
quite comfortable there.
The next day we got up and went on a Whale
Watch with
the Pacific Whale Foundation. We saw lots
of whales,
mostly from a distance, but one surfaced
right behind
our boat with a huge splash. We saw
one
whale breeching also.
The fishing boat next to us brought in 2 mahi and
a striped marlin.
That afternoon we went to the Maui Ocean
Center
in Maalea. It was a great aquarium and the
Seabreeze Cafe had a wonderful lunch for
a great price.
That night we went to the Old Lahaina Luau.
Great food and a great show!!

Our last day in Maui, we decided to drive
up to Hana,
I haven't made this drive in over 12 years,
and
I was very disappointed. We had a great
breakfast
at the Milagro Cafe in Paia, and picked
up delicious
cookies and muffins at the Cake Walk Bakery
across the street for snacks.
But the waterfalls were almost non existant!
I guess they've diverted all the streams
for
taro planting but it is not worth the drive
without
all the waterfalls. Maybe I've lived
on the Big Island for so long I'm not so
easily
impressed with Maui now, who knows.
On the way home, we saw great views
of the Maui coast and the snow on
Mauna Kea. It was a fun trip,
but we're ready for a restful weekend at
Waikaloa.
